Advanced Surgery:
At the Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Mobile, we perform a variety of specialized and complex orthopedic, soft-tissue, and neurological surgeries.
Starting this December, we will once again be offering specialized surgical services. The Animal ER welcomes Dr. Robert Martin, DACVS to our team of doctors. Dr. Martin is a 1976 Auburn graduate. Upon graduation, he spend the next 4 years in service of our great country with the United States Air Force Veterinary Corps. Upon completion of his service, he then attended and completed a surgical residency at Cornell University in '83. Dr. Martin then took a position as a faculty small animal surgeon with the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine from '83-2008. In 2008, he entered private practice when he opened the Southern Regional Veterinary Specialists in Dothan, AL where he is to this day. Dr. Martin will be joining us every other Friday in order to bring the level of surgical services that only a Board Certified Surgeon can to the greater Mobile area.
So, what is a Board Certified Surgeon and why is that a such a benefit for my pet?
A board certified surgeon is a veterinarian who has gone through advanced training in the area of surgery and anesthesia far above and beyond a non-boarded veterinarian. This training is only offered at university veterinary hospital and large state of the art referral centers. It is a three year training program focused solely on advanced surgery and surgical techniques as well as advanced anesthesia. Once the training is completed, they then have to pass an exhausting battery of tests proving they have obtained a superior knowledge base and skill level.
